How Does Naturalization In The UK Work?

If you’ve been resident in the UK for more than 5 years and presently hold a settled status, you could be eligible to naturalise as a British citizen. How do I know if I qualify for naturalisation? The qualifying criteria to be met is as follows: • You have continuously resided in the UK for the past 5 years without absences out of the UK amounting to no more than 450 days over that period • You have held a settled status (Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) / Right of Abode of Permanent Residence) for at least 12 months. • You have not spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months • You meet the Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK requirement • You meet the Good Character Requirement What is the Life in the UK Test? If you are applying for British Citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain, in most cases you first have to pass the Life in UK test. Also known as the British Citizenship test, the Life in UK test is used to verify that applicants have the adequate knowledge of British customs, traditions, laws and political system, as required under the UK’s immigration rules.
